Why traders are opposing lbt

The BJP raised the issue in the assembly recently asking the state government to clarify its stand on the vexed issue.

An option to abolish the tax has since been under consideration. The city has around 64, traders who have registered for LBT.

The union issued a statement saying that if the LBT was scrapped, managing the PMC's finances would become a tough task. The civic administration will be left with no option but to deal with major needs with very less money.

The government has to realise that we are opposing the concept of the tax itself and not the modality. The association has also written to the Chief Minister with a fax copy of a notice by assessing authority to a dealer in Parbhani, in Marathwada. This is a clear case of harassment. Earlier in June, the BJP had warned of the government of intensifying its agitation against LBT if the Maharashtra government failed to abolish it in the next 10 days.

Traders in these areas were forced to get registration numbers and were served three-day notices to pay LBT, along with interest and late fee, on the monthly turnover from sales in the local area.

Traders across the state are opposing the present form of LBT which is totally at a variance with the draft submitted by FAM and other chambers of commerce. It has appealed to the state government to keep the implementation of LBT in abeyance till further discussions with the trading community aimed at arriving at a consensus.
